about text

The old mafioso Minolo Batista, a promulgator of the traditionalist patriarchal life, has three daughters, beautiful, of marriageable age, but won’t let any man near them. On the other side, Katarina, the youngest one, doesn’t want her sisters Bianka and Klara to experience the conjugal fate of their late mother, who suffered quietly and humbly by her husband’s side. So she becomes a harbinger of new values, she behaves like an untame woman and everybody slags her as a feminist. But suitors nevertheless start circulating the house – how will they manage to woo the beautiful maidens? Will their disguises as housemaids make their way easier, or create confusion and trouble? And what will the war of arguments between the daring feminist and the arduous macho Petručo, who thinks every man needs “money and a wench” and preferably “gets both as a package”, turn into?

The text, inspired by Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, is full of entertaining, farcical situations. It’s written in a lush humorous dialect with Mlakar’s signature songs, a number of which have entered the realm of folk music. SNG Nova Gorica and Theatre Koper thus continue the series of hits from Primorska, such A Healer by Force!, Everyman and Passion which, with more than a hundred reprises each, have won over the hearts of comedy lovers as well as a number of awards. This time as well, the direction will be in the capable hands of Vito Taufer and the actors will be supported in their creative work on this musical-theatre experience by a trio playing live music.
