about text

Galileo Galilei was an astronomer, physicist, engineer, philosopher, mathematician. He has been called many things, father of observational astronomy, father of scientific methods, father of science. Because of his inventions and achievements he is considered as one of the most recognisable and interesting personalities in human history. The Inquisition banned Galileo from claiming that the Earth orbits around the Sun and not the other way around. Despite that in 1632 he presented his teachings in the Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, Ptolemaic and Copernican, which a year later was found heretic, since it went against the official cosmology and biblical theses. At the age of seventy, Galileo was thus forced to spend the rest of his life under house arrest.

Galileo's unique personality, life facts, scientific discoveries and historical period he lived in were the starting points for research and development of this devised piece. The creative team intertwined topics, inspiration and motivation that link the scientific curiosity and fate of the historical Galileo with the search for truth, happiness and personal freedom of an individual in  today's society. Why? Because Galileo was a master in not giving up the fight against all odds.

The performance is addressing young viewers (from 15th year up), as well as adults. It will balance on the edge between science and art, drama and puppetry, performance and conference.

Zoran Petrovič studied directing, alternative and puppet theatre at the DAMU in Prague, and this is his SNG Nova Gorica directorial debut.
