about text

Galileo Galilei was an astronomer, physicist, engineer, philosopher, mathematician. He has been called many things, the father of observational astronomy, the father of scientific methods, the father of science. Because of his inventions and achievements, he is considered as one of the most recognisable and interesting personalities in human history. The Inquisition banned Galileo from claiming that the Earth orbits around the Sun and not the other way around. Despite that, in 1632, he presented his teachings in the Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, Ptolemaic and Copernican, which was then a year later found vehemently heretic, because it went against the official cosmology and biblical theses. At the age of seventy, Galileo was thus forced to spend the rest of his life under house arrest.

The performance will address young viewers (third triad of primary school and secondary school students), as well as adults. It will be conceived on the border between drama and performance art, and between art and science. We could also describe it as theatre of things, because the models of telescopes, mechanisms and inventions from Galileo’s times, which are in one or another way still used to this day, will come to life and allow performers to interact with them.

The goal of the performance will be to encourage curiosity, or more precisely, put curiosity in the very centre of impulses that make us research, discover, win. In 2008, a group of American and Japanese scientists proved that to study efficiently, curiosity is the key, a characteristic that we are indeed born with, but with the upbringing, societal pressures and influences from the family and social life we often suppress and hinder its development and expansion. At the same time, the production will focus on the individual’s freedom and right to develop one’s skills and search for happiness that leads not only into the personal, but also the collective good. After all, the performance will problematise the forces that would like to position themselves above the laws of nature and humans.

Zoran Petrovič studied directing, alternative and puppet theatre at the DAMU in Prague, and this is his SNG Nova Gorica directorial debut.
