about the author

Srečko Fišer, 1953, graduated from the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana with a bachelor's degree in Comparative literature and literary theory and Slovenian language and literature. He spent two years as a lecturer of Slovenian language at the University of Nottingham, and since 1981 he has been a language consultant - and for many performances also an »uncredited« dramaturge - at the theatre in Nova Gorica, where he had briefly (in the season 1989/90) served also as an artistic director.


He translates from English, Italian and French, writes literary reviews, essays and also commentaries for his translations. In addition to the many plays - Ettore Petrolini's Chicchignola, Luigi Pirandello's Six Characters in Search of an Author, Pier Paolo Pasolini's Orgy, Eduardo De Filippo's Grand Magic, John Webster's The duchess of Malfi, Alan Ayckbourn's A Chorus of Disapproval, Carlo Goldoni' The Fan, Angelo Beolco Ruzzante's Love, War, Famine (together with Iztok Mlakar), Luigi Pirandello's Henry IV, Luigi Pirandello As You Desire me, Aldo Nicolaj It wasn't the Fifth, it was the Nineth, Howard Barker's The Love of a Good Man, Eugene Ionesco's The Bald Soprano, Plešasta pevka, Frenzy for two, Sam Shepard's A Lie of the Mind, Jim Cartwright's Two, Pierre de Marivaux's The Dispute, Peter Barnes's Not As Bad As They Seem, Samuel Beckett Endgame, Neil Simon the Prisoner of the Second Avenue, Angelo Beolco Ruzante's La Moscheta, Carlo Goldoni's A Servant to Two Masters, David Ives's All in the Timing, Carlo Goldoni's The Venetian Twins, Ken Ludwig's Lend Me A Tenor, Carlo Gozzi's The Green Bird, Christopher Marlowe's Edward II - he translated a number of important novels (Henry James The Turn of the Screw, Umberto Eco The Name of the Rose, Virginia Woolf The Wavesi Italo Svevo Short Sentimental Journey, Italo Calvino Invisible Cities, The castle of Crossed Destinies, Elsa Morante Aracoeli, Kazuo Ishiguro The Remains of the Day, William Faulkner As I Lay Dying). He also translated and edited stories for the anthology of English short prose of the 19th century with fantastic themes, A Lifted Veil, an a selection of Torquato Tasso's poetry entitled Love is the Soul of the World and William Shakespeare's Sonnets. His translation work also includes non-fiction and essays (Arnaldo Momigliano Studies in Historiography, Eugenio Garin Essays on the Renaissance, Giovanni Levi Inheriting Power). For the translations of The Remains of the Day and as I Lay Dying he received the Sovre Award for translation in 1997, and in 2001 the Bevk Award for his work in the field of translation.

Srečko Fišer has recently been focusing on writing for theatre. So far, the following works have been staged: a libretto for a one act fairy-tale opera Lucia and Ambrosio, a fable for young people The Smell of a Hare, a stage adaptation of Ciril Kosmac's novella That Lovely Day (all three in SNG Nova Gorica), a dramatisation of Alexandre Dumas Queen Margot (at the Mladinsko Theatre, Ljubljana), Meanwhile, based on the motives of Primo Levi, which received the award for the best performance at the 2005 Borštnikovo Meeting theatre festival, and the play Prihodnje, odhodnje (The Coming, The Going) was nominated for the Grum Award for the best new Slovenian play in 2004 (both staged in SNG Nova Gorica).
