A baptismal production

1979 is the eighth episode of The Dodecalogy 1972–1983, the biggest art project of the European Capital of Culture Nova Gorica–Gorizia.

In 1979, the American series Roots hits the Slovenian small screens and is, like in the United States of America, enthusiastically received. Philips introduces the first compact disc (CD), and the first Sony Walkman appears on the market. The United Nations declare 1979 the International Year of the Child and ABBA releases Chiquitita to celebrate it. China and the USA establish full diplomatic relationships. The Vietnamese troops enter the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, and overthrow the regime of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge. Ayatollah Khomeini takes power in Iran and transforms the country into an Islamic Republic. Margaret Thatcher is appointed the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Saddam Hussein becomes the President of Iraq.  Soviet forces enter Afghanistan and the Soviet-Afghan War begins. Pope John Paul II makes a nine-day visit to his native Poland and becomes the first pope to visit a communist country. The photos from Voyager I reveal the existence of Jupiter's rings. Pluto crosses inside Neptune’s orbit – for the first time after both were discovered. Smallpox is declared the first infectious disease to be fully eradicated. The legendary Yugoslav basketball team plays at the EuroBasket  and one of the matches is in Gorizia, with many fans from Nova Gorica in attendance. Yugoslavia plays against Israel and loses in the final moments by one point, meaning that Israel plays against the Soviet Union in the finals and not Yugoslavia, which wins the bronze.
