1982 is the eleventh episode of The Dodecalogy 1972–1983, the biggest art project of the European Capital of Culture Nova Gorica–Gorizia.

The year 1982 is the time of fuel vouchers, the time of [Marko] Brecelj (Desant na rt dobre nade) and group Buldožerji (Ako ste slobodni večeras), the time when  Katarina II is formed, the band from which Ekatarina Velika will develop. It is the year when the Falklands War begins and ends, the Israeli army withdraws from the Sinai Peninsula following a peace agreement and 750.000 people gather at a nuclear disarmament rally in New York City, the first compact discs (CDs) appear on the German market, the United Nations celebrate the first International Day of Peace, the Soviet probe Venera 14 lands on Venus and the legendary ZX Spectrum is launched. Although the political system doesn’t allow citizens to import computer technology, the “rainbow” finds ways to sneak into many Slovenian homes.

In the year of the longest lunar eclipse of the 20th century, Nova Gorica senses the tremors caused by the earthquake in the Savinja Valley, Hajduk, one of the most important football clubs in Yugoslavia, arrives in Nova Gorica to play a friendly match against Vozila, drawing nearly 5,000 spectators, and the first mountain climbing expedition from Primorska sets out for the Andes.

Tomi Janežič takes us to some other times, but does not romanticise them. The leaps in time and the narrative of the story are clear and concise. Throughout, Janežič reminds us that we are in theatre: the prompter and stage hands are constantly present on stage, but they don’t disturb, rather, they let the scenes breathe. Once the performance is over, Janežič seems like a magician who deftly manoeuvred everything described here, and the spectators like children who, with all their attention fall straight into the fairy tale
