On 9 March 1976, Ljubljana receives 70 cm of snow in 24 hours. Television broadcasts TV series Sandokan and Grlom u jagode (The Unpicked Strawberries). That year, a disastrous earthquake strikes China and claims a quarter of a million lives. North and South Vietnam unite to form the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and the arrest of the Gang of Four ends the Cultural Revolution in China. The American spacecraft Viking 1 successfully lands on Mars, and Nasa space agency releases the famous photograph of the “Face on Mars”. The Yugoslav basketball team beat the Soviet Union and win silver at the Olympic Games in Montreal. The Japanese gymnast Shun Fujimoto competes in the team championship with his right knee injured. Because the competition with the Soviet Union is so close, he doesn’t reveal the severity of his injury; despite a broken knee, he finishes his performance on the rings and executes a perfect landing with a triple somersault and flawless posture. His score of 9,7 secures gold for Japan. When asked years later if he would repeat that, he replies without hesitation: “No, I would not.”
Two planes collide over Vrbovec, killing 176 passengers and crew members aboard both aircrafts. Danilo Kiš writes A Tomb for Boris Davidovich and Ivo Mojzer releases the song Ti si rekla sonce (You said ‘Sun’).
A new particleboard factory Meblo Nova Gorica opens. Argonavti, the large hotel, recreation and entertainment centre, also opens its doors. The first Friendship March Nova Gorica – Gorizia is organised. A union of choral societies of the Goriška region is formed, as well as Zveza pevskih zborov Primorske (Union of Choirs of the Primorska Region), along with many other associations and federations. The Firefighters’ Association of Slovenia holds its 8th congress in Nova Gorica, and the 6th Winter Sports Games take place on Kanin.
On 6 May 1976 at 21.00 hours, Friuli and the Soča Valley experience an earthquake that results in almost 1,000 fatalities, around 3,000 injuries and 157,000 people left homeless. Thousands of buildings are destroyed. Despite international help, by the end of 1976, 15,000 people are still living in trailers, 1,000 in tents and 25,000 in evacuation centres. The earthquake damages several buildings in Nova Gorica, where a number of residents take refuge at the stadium and spend the night there.
