After two warmly received albums, new songs are branching out from the great bowl of Bakalina Velika on their third album, Use kar sije (“All That Shines”). Here shine the fireflies that light the way on Midsummer Night, as well as the sincerity of a blacksmith dreaming of a better world and setting out toward a more peaceful life. Shining too are the places where we become aware of our own transience, and the moments when we realize that “we are all one and the same.”
At a time when fiery unrest is raging in many parts of the world, the lyrics of Jani Kutin direct our attention toward the light. He weaves his songs with curiosity, probing what it means to be human today and what it meant long ago in ancient times — or in the days of the Celtic woman whose grave was discovered in his pasture. These sung existential questions and the wisdom arising from them intertwine with daring instrumental threads masterfully spun by Samo Kutin, Matej Magajne, Dejan Lapanja, Andrea Pandolfo, and Marjan Stanić. “At times gentle, mostly impassioned, yet always performed with a strong sense of storytelling,” as Enja Grabrijan wrote.
The range of instruments is astonishing: from inventive combinations of percussion and sound objects to handmade instruments crafted from approximately 6,500-year-old fir wood, which the Kutin brothers discovered in a pond near the village of Čadrg. The hands of the Kutin family and their friends — such as Sebastijan Gršak, who also appears as a guest on the album — skillfully shaped a lyre, flute, and drum, which in one of the compositions are reborn with a stone age sound.
