Thirty-somethings

Lana, Antea, and Leticija are nearly grown-up girls and good friends. Lana is highly educated and hard-working. All she wants is a successful career. Antea is an artist and a fighter for women’s rights. All she wants is to make art and live free nonconventional life. Leticija is a successful lawyer and she is perfect. She has actually already achieved all she has wanted, but she still lacks something. She has just got a job abroad, something that has been a goal for all three of them. They want to leave Slovenia, they want to go to a promised land, where they can live freely, without prejudice, without expectations, and where their competence and hard work would be appreciated.

Instead of in the promised land, they end up at a turning point of their life that brings a tornado of great life’s decisions. This turning point is also a severe test for their friendship, for their life’s beliefs, for everything they only imagined about adulthood.

Thirty-somethings on the one hand tackles the idea of a modern woman that the protagonists have envisioned for themselves when they were students in their early twenties, when idealism was still strong, but are now faced with a real society and their role in it. Can they really be as free as they think? Are their decisions really theirs or are they primarily directed by the expectations of others? A comedy about how to preserve self and at the same time be a woman introduces circumstances of many modern independent and educated women who want to create their own life, but are divided between the values of the past and the present.

The sublime directorial baton was in the hands of Tijana Zinajić, whose last project in our theatre was the hit production Realists. This time, she invited writers and dramaturgs Eva Mahkovic and Tereza Gregorič to work with her, because they are familiar with the topic: as protagonists’ peers, they often tackle their own anxieties in their work, at the same time sincerely and with an ironic distance.
